Special Educational Needs Policy

It is a requirement of SEND 2015, EYFS 2014 and Discrimination act 2010 that all child care settings provide a policy and procedure that outlines the support structure which is in place to provide suitable care & facilities for children who have additional needs or disabilities.

All children in my care are given the opportunity to play with all the toys.

Activities will be adapted to make sure all children have the opportunity to take part.

I will provide relevant activities to make sure it promotes each child’s welfare, development and individual needs.

I will do regular assessments on all children on a regular basis and discuss with the parents any concerns I have.

I will get permission from parents to speak to other professionals concerned.

Teaching and Learning

I use development matters (EYFS) as a guide for each child’s development.

I make sure each child is cared for and supported to help build there self -esteem and confidence, this helps them to feel secure.

I will share a daily diary with the parents and answer any questions they may have.

Planning is done around each child’s strengths and needs using starting points and observations.

Identifying and Assessing Special Educational Needs

I use EYFS, starting points, observations, I talk, 2-year progress checks.

If I feel there is any areas of concern I will speak to the parents first then get permission to speak to outside agencies i.e. Health Visitor, Senco coordinator, Slough Borough Council development worker, this way I can access any additional support the child may need.

Involving Parents and Children and Young People in Planning and Reviewing Progress

I work closely with parents on a daily basis, I provide a daily diary so they know what activities we do each day.

All children have their own individual folders with their observations in them, I use these to make plans for each child.

I ask children and parents to do a questionnaire of the child’s likes and dislike, activity idea’s, how I can improve and feedback.

Additional Support

I ask for extra support from the Early Years Development worker.

I would access support from my local Senco Co-Coordinator or any other outside specialist. With permission from the parents.

Extra Activities

Before a child starts with me outings/trips are discussed and added to the contract.

I discuss with parents and get their permission for any outing/trips outside our daily routine.

Risk assessments are done prior to trips/outings taking into consideration all the children in my care.

Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of Children and Young People with SEN

Each child’s overall well-being is my personal concern, I have a behavior policy in place which I implement, I re-enforce positive behavior and encourage that by praise.

I do regular training this includes Pediatric First aid, Safeguarding.

I record accidents/ incidents, medication & concerns.

If I had any concerns a child was being bullied or bullying another child in my care I would discuss the matter with the parents and work with the child to resolve this.

Keeping Up to Date with Knowledge and Skills

Keeping up to date with knowledge and skills

I am up to date with all my training.

Pediatric First Aid

Safeguarding

Early Years foundation stages

I am registered with ICO

I have attended a course on Autism

I will access any other training as the need arises to make sure my development and knowledge continues.

Transitions

I have a settling in period for as long as necessary which I follow for all new children/parents.

It is based on each child’s individual needs that I discuss with the parents.

I arrange short visits with child to start, Parents are welcome to stay, and I increase this as the child/parent get more confident.

I work to the same Development Matters EYFS requirements as school and nurseries, each child has their own folders and with parents’ permission they can look at your child’s development.
