At Be Happy Pre school, we understand the importance of providing your child with a fun, caring and high quality learning environment. We strongly believe in building positive happy relationships with the local community.  

Our pre school will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum with a commitment to our core values

We ensure that each child:

• is in a safe and stimulating environment;

• has the chance to join in with other children and adults to live, play, work and learn together;

• is in a setting that sees parents as partners in helping each child to learn and develop;

Learning through play

• They use the EYFS statutory guidance to plan and provide opportunities which will help children to make progress in all areas of learning. This program is made up of a mixture of activities that children plan and organise for themselves and activities planned and led by practitioners.

Special Educational Needs Policy

We provide an environment in which all children with special educational needs (SEN) are supported to reach their full potential.

  • We have regard for the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014).
  • We have in place a clear approach for identifying, responding to, and meeting children’s SEN1 .
  • We support and involve parents (and where relevant children), actively listening to, and acting on their wishes and concerns.
  • We work in partnership with the local authority and other external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for children with SEN and their families.
  • We regularly monitor and review our policy, practice and provision and, if necessary, make adjustments. Procedures § We designate a member of staff to be the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and give his/her name to parents.

  • The SENCO works closely with our manager and other colleagues and has responsibility for the day-to-day operation of our Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy and for co-ordinating provision for children with SEN.
  • We ensure that the provision for children with SEN is the responsibility of all members of the setting.
  • We ensure that our inclusive admissions practice ensures equality of access and opportunity.
  • We provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum for all children.
  • We apply SEN support to ensure early identification of children with SEN.
  • We use the graduated approach system (assess, plan, do and review) applied in increasing detail and frequency to ensure that children progress.
  • We ensure that parents are involved at all stages of the assessment, planning, provision and review of their children's special education including all decision making processes
  • We where appropriate, take into account children’s views and wishes in decisions being made about them, relevant to their level understanding.
  • We provide parents with information on local sources of support and advice e.g. Local Offer, Information, Advice and Support Service.
  • We liaise and work with other external agencies to help improve outcomes for children with SEN.
  • We have systems in place for referring children for further assessment e.g. Common Assessment Framework/Early Help Assessment and Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessment.
  • We provide resources (human and financial) to implement [our/my] Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy.
  • We ensure that all our staff are aware of our Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy and the procedures for identifying, assessing and making provision for children with SEN. [We/I] provide in-service training for parents, practitioners and volunteers.
  • We raise awareness of our special education provision via our website and or promotional materials.   • We ensure the effectiveness of our special educational needs provision by collecting information from a range of sources e.g. action plan reviews, staff and management meetings, parental and external agency's views, inspections and complaints. This information is collated, evaluated and reviewed annually.
  • We provide a complaints procedure.
  • We monitor and review our policy annually. 
Teaching and Learning

We ensure that all our childrens needs are met by effectlvely executing the keyworker system to ensure staf have close relationships with individual children.

This enables our staff to really understand and connect with the child in order to find the areas that may need support or further development.

We use a strong clear planning system which all staff are confident with to ensure children are planned for individually and effectivly making their next steps reachable.

We use an online planning and assesment scheme which allows management to oversee all childrens progress and flag up any concerns or patterns, this also allows staff to have a clear overview of their children and their practice as practitioners.

We follow the Early Years frame work strictly by completing all mandatory assesments at the right times to ensure children are on the right paths to development leaving space for early intervention.

Staff ratios are followed strictly to ensure safety at all toime of the children and our staff are always kept fully upto date with all changes to the framework and training needed.

Identifying and Assessing Special Educational Needs

The keyworker system is effective when ensuring childrens needs are not missed. Staff work closely with children and within the guidelines of the Early Years framework and outcomes. When children are assesed at baseline or progress check it is an indicator that children may need additional support and allows us to intervene early.

With consent and conversations with the parent the setting SENDCO will make observations and if needed take these further with the local authorities SEND leaders.

Otherwise a simple IEP plan will be created by the SENDCO and the keyworker to support the targetted areas of the child. the IEP will be reviewed regularrly in order to maintain effective practise and support.

If the child still continues to show signs of delayment risks the setting SENDCO along with the local authority SEN leaders will plan the next steps with the family.

If Parents have concerns about their children this is a conversation to have with their Keyworker or with the setting SENDCO and this person is clearly posted on the parents board.

Involving Parents and Children and Young People in Planning and Reviewing Progress

At Be Happy  we take pride in the strong relationships with our parents and hold termly parents evenings for more detailed discussions around the children.

Parents have a chance to discuss any concerns they may have or to give general feedback.

We send out regular parent surveys to gather oponions of how we could support our parents needs more and the staff and keyworkers speak to their parents on a daily basis.

Any concerns that staff members may have will be fed back to parents immediatly to discuss a solution best fitting to all parties.

Parents also have access to their child's online journal which they can visit at all times to see the progress of their child and the work staff are doing with them, they are able to comment on observations.

Additional Support

At Be Happy we have very close relationships with our specialist in the local authority such as SENDCOs, OTs, SALT and many more Early Years workers who have an abundance of knowledge that will help our practise and our childrens development.

If we feel a child may be in need of additional support we will speak with the parent and either direct them to our local childrens centre or ask permission to bring in an outside source for additional support.

All activites we provide will be made available to all children regarless of their abilities, if we need to move activities from floor to table or visa vera to ensure accessibility we will. For sight problems we can make resources bigger and more appealing to all. We will always do whatever we can to ensure all children benefit from being here and develop to the best of their abilities.

Extra Activities

We incorporate all activities into our normal practise, if any additional activities are needed we will find a way to incorporate these into our day to day routine.

Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of Children and Young People with SEN

We offer all our children a warm loving, exciting enviroment that they will make them feel happy and confident in. We understand that family life can be stressfull and we want all children coming here to feel liberated from any stress their family may be dealing with.

We get to know our children well and adapt our setting to support and excite them, leaving them with a home like feeling.

The keyworker system ensures that children have that safe place at all times and feel secure when in the setting allowing them to thrive here.

We support and encourage friendships in the setting and teach children about expectations and adapting to the society to make all later life transitions easier and more managable for them.

We keep close communications with other settings that may be involved with the child to ensure a strong circle of trust and support for the child and their family. This applies to children with additional needs, we keep a close, strong circle with all agencies involved to ensure the best outcome and plan is in place to help support.

Keeping Up to Date with Knowledge and Skills

The setting's SENDCOs offers upto date knowledge and support and is supported by a SEN leader to ensure double effectivlness. 

Management have all had up to date training in all crucial areas of childcare such as safeguarding, managment and all other relevant areas.

Staff are frequently updated on framework changes through staff meetings and quick morning meetings. Safeguarding training is updated annually and is either outsourced or organised in house by the management team.

We use an online EDUCARE system for all staff to keep upto date with training needs.

We regularly attend meetings with the local authority to update areas such as FGM, The Prevent duty and others.

Transitions

With all transistions we ensure we have had a good handover from any previous settings that may have attended or ask for a up to date report of the child so we know how best to start.

The settling process varies from child to child depending on their needs at the time, some need longer than others.

We will keep the parent around for as long as the child needs, we will not allow a child to cry out for the parents as we do not feel this is a beneficial process for the child nor the parent. The childs keyworker will be present for the entire time of the settling period to ensure the child knows they have a safe base in this new setting.

For children leaving us to go to a new setting or school we will complete a full end of term report with lots of details about the child to ensure a smooth and steady transition. We will also be present if the other setting needs any support.
