Special Educational Needs Policy

It is a requirement of SEND 2015, the EYFS and the Discrimination Act 2010 that my childcare setting provides a Policy and procedure which outlines the support structure in place to provide suitable care and facilities for children with additional needs or disabilities.

My setting is based in a first floor flat and may not be suitable for some children with additional needs or disabilities, there if no lift access, so therefore for example children in wheelchairs would be unable to access my setting without some difficulty.

Children's needs will be assessed at beginning of care and all parent/children/carers will be involved in any discussions to provide for child's individual  needs.

I will always obtain permission from parents to discuss the child's ongoing needs with other professionals concerned with the child's care to gain advice or help if needed.

All children will be treated with respect and their individual needs taken into consideration at all times.

Assessments are undertaken at regular intervals and discussed with parents. Concerns will be addressed as they arise and strategies discussed to ensure the child's needs are being met.

I am the SENCO for my setting.

Teaching and Learning

Children are given opportunities to play in a warm and welcoming environment, to do their best and interact with other children.

All children regardless of race, religion or disability will be treated fairly and equally.

Teaching and learning will be tailored to each child's stage of development.

Identifying and Assessing Special Educational Needs

I will work closely with parents to identify a child's individual achievements and areas where they might need some more support. through regular discussion we will be able to talk about any concerns either myself, or parents have. I follow the Early years foundation stage and make regular   observations and assessments to track children's learning journey and progress.

If I think a child in my care has a special educational need I will keep observational notes, share these with the child's parents, discuss/find out what additional support is available, keep all matters confidential and work with the parents/carers to decide what action to take.

Involving Parents and Children and Young People in Planning and Reviewing Progress

I encourage parent to discuss any concerns with me. I will discuss any concerns I have with parents, we can then plan and review progress the child is making in my setting and if needed access additional support.

Parents are welcome to talk to me at any time.

Additional Support

If I feel a child needs additional support, with parents permission, I will contact my local area SENCO. I will work alongside any other professionals involved in the care of a child, eg speech and language therapists etc.

I will help to prepare children for nursery or school through activities and helping them develop their skills to enable them to flourish eg being able to put shoes and coat on, go to the toilet independently, wash hands after toileting, before eating. I will encourage children to carry own bags, lunch boxes, care for their belonging so they know where they are, generally encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves safely.
