ARCPreSchool is an Ofsted approved, privately owned childcare provider.   We are located in the heart of Britwell, at the Britwell Youth and Community Project.

ARCPreSchool caters for families with children aged between 2-5 years old and offers private full time and part time places as well as limited funded places (15 hours per week).

We offer:

Special Educational Needs Policy

ARC Pre School are committed to the inclusion of all children.  We believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn, play and progress in an enriched environment alongside their peers.

We provide an environment in which children with special educational needs (SEN) are welcome and supported to reach their full potential.

We have regard for the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2014) and support parents and children with special educational needs in accordance to our Admissions Policy.

We identify the specific needs of children with special educational needs and meet those needs through a range of SEN strategies, interventions and support when required to, by working in partnership with parents and other agencies in meeting individual children's needs.   We monitor and review our policy, practice and provision and, if necessary, make adjustments to support all children.

 

Our opening times:

Monday to Thursday:  Core hours 8.45 to 11.45 and 12.15 to 3.15 pm
Friday:  8.45 am to 11.45 am

We also try to offer some flexibility in order to meet the needs of our families.  For example, extended hours in the morning and afternoon.  Please contact us for more information.  

Teaching and Learning

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework which supports an integrated approach to early learning and care.  This is a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children.

Practitioners use the EYFS Framework to promote and deliver high quality provision to meet the needs of all children by reducing barriers to achievement at any level.  We use different approaches and techniques according to children’s needs.  These include one to one sessions, group sessions, specific activities, and use of additional or adapted resources.

A personal record of each child’s development is kept and updated and notes progress, interests and fascinations and areas of work with your child that requires further support or help.  Planning for each child is done on an individual basis and diverse needs based on observations.  We promote learning through adult-led and child initiated opportunities indoors and outdoors.

Identifying and Assessing Special Educational Needs

ARC Preschool uses the graduated approach to support children with SEN.  We assess, plan, do and review our work as prescribed in the SEN Code of Practice 2014. Also as part of the review and monitoring approach we invite parents to discuss and meet their child’s key person, and the SENCO to talk about their child’s achievements and progress.

Prior to your child starting at the setting we ask each family to complete a registration form and meet us to discuss your child’s needs.  On starting at ARC Preschool, we observe your child by looking, listening and noting what he or she is doing.  We make assessments and analyse observations and decide what steps need to be taken to support and develop your child.  We plan to ensure that we are meeting your child’s needs giving experiences and opportunities in an enriched environment which includes providing resources and routines appropriate to your child’s requirements.  You will be introduced to your child’s key person who will work with you and other agencies, depending on your child’s needs to ensure your child is working towards their full potential.  We do this by:

  • Liaising with parents.
  • Observing children’s development and monitoring progress over time.
  • Obtaining relevant reports from other professionals, if applicable.
  • Attend meetings with lead professionals and contribute to education and care plans.
  • Seek any training information required to support your child.
Involving Parents and Children and Young People in Planning and Reviewing Progress

We encourage involvement from parents in a number of ways:

  •   Provide Individual Education Planning meetings
  •   Reporting to parents on a regular basis
  •   Asking parents to complete questionnaires
  •   Attend transition meetings
  •   Invite parents to progress meetings
  •   Record achievements and progress through a Learning Journey.

Identifying and Assessing Special Educational Needs

All parents and children are invited to ARC Pre School to visit our setting so that they have first hand knowledge of how we work with children to develop their learning and achieve their full potential.  In some cases we may need to carry out home visits beforehand to discuss any concerns.

If we find a child is not making the progress expected or their needs are too complex for the setting to meet, the setting would request an education, health and care needs assessment.

Additional Support

Other support in identifying and assessing special educational needs

We work closely with our local authority.   Our Lead SENCO seeks advice and support from the local authority Early Years Advisors and Area SEN Advisor when extra support is needed.  If further support is required we will request training to be provided depending on the needs of individual children.  In addition, we sign-post parents and carers to their local Children’s Centre who may be able to offer additional help, advice and support to families.

ARC Pre School attend regular training and courses and liaise with multi-agency professionals to ensure that our staff are knowledgeable and training is up to date in order to work with and meet the needs of your child.

 An example of training attended:

  • Speech and Language Cluster meetings
  • Special educational needs training updates and meetings
  • All staff work towards or hold relevant childcare qualifications.
  • All staff attend regular meetings where information and updates are discussed.
  • Staff working practices are reviewed regularly to ensure that recent “best practice” is in place.
  • Early Literacy & Language Practitioner

 Our staff are experienced in identifying children who may be displaying:

  • Speech and language needs
  • Global development delay
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Behaviour, social and emotional needs
Extra Activities

We have a large outdoor area that the children can explore with a dedicated play area.  Our staff are committed to working with your children in a safe and friendly environment.

Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of Children and Young People with SEN

The staff at ARC Pre School are supportive of all the children's social and emotional needs.  Our experience and knowledge enable us to provide for children's behavioural, social and emotional needs.  Targeted strategies are used to meet specific needs and these are discussed with parents on  an individual basis.  We aim to provide an environment whereby children feel safe in order to learn and develop.

Keeping Up to Date with Knowledge and Skills

Staff attend various training opportunities and these include training with:

  • the Local Authority Advisory team
  • other professional providers such as Food Safety Avisers
  • East Berkshire College
  • In house training
  • All staff are encouraged to achieve their Level 3 qualification
  • Pre School Learning Alliance

 

Transitions

We work closely with children and their parents to support them with any transitions that their child may be going through.

If required, additional professional advice may be sought following discussions with parents and external agencies.
